OpenAI just released GPT-4.5 and says it is its biggest and best chat model yet

MIT Technology Review

People with a 200-a-month ChatGPT Pro account can try out GPT-4.5 today. OpenAI says it will begin rolling out to other users next week. With each release of its GPT models, OpenAI has shown that bigger means better. But there has been a lot of talk about how that approach is hitting a wall--including remarks from OpenAI's former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The company's claims about GPT-4.5 feel like a thumb in the eye to the naysayers.

OpenAI Just Gave Away the Entire Game

If you're looking to understand the philosophy that underpins Silicon Valley's latest gold rush, look no further than OpenAI's Scarlett Johansson debacle. The story, according to Johansson's lawyers, goes like this: Nine months ago, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman approached the actor with a request to license her voice for a new digital assistant; Johansson declined. She alleges that just two days before the company's keynote event last week, in which that assistant was revealed as part of a new system called GPT-4o, Altman reached out to Johansson's team, urging the actor to reconsider. Johansson and Altman allegedly never spoke, and Johansson allegedly never granted OpenAI permission to use her voice. Nevertheless, the company debuted Sky two days later--a program with a voice many believed was alarmingly similar to Johansson's.

OpenAI just released the AI it said was too dangerous to share

#artificialintelligence

In February, artificial intelligence research startup OpenAI announced the creation of GPT-2, an algorithm capable of writing impressively coherent paragraphs of text. But rather than release the AI in its entirety, the team shared only a smaller model out of fear that people would use the more robust tool maliciously -- to produce fake news articles or spam, for example. But on Tuesday, OpenAI published a blog post announcing its decision to release the algorithm in full as it has "seen no strong evidence of misuse so far." According to OpenAI's post, the company did see some "discussion" regarding the potential use of GPT-2 for spam and phishing, but it never actually saw evidence of anyone misusing the released versions of the algorithm. The problem might be that, while GPT-2 is one of -- if not the -- best text-generating AIs in existence, it still can't produce content that's indistinguishable from text written by a human. And OpenAI warns it's those algorithms we'll have to watch out for.

OpenAI just released a new version of its fake news-writing AI

#artificialintelligence

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence firm that Elon Musk founded then later departed, just released a stronger version of its "conversational" text-writing AI system. When OpenAI first released the algorithm, dubbed GPT-2, back in February, the company declared that it was too dangerous to release to the public, instead opting to share a watered-down version. Now, OpenAI announced that it's sharing a new version that's six times as robust as the original -- while keeping an eye out to make sure people don't misuse it. In the past, OpenAI expressed concerns that its AI could be used to flood the internet with fake news and propaganda. The first model had notable flaws and telltale signs that its output was machine-written.
